Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has claimed that Iran’s new leadership has requested a ceasefire from Washington; a claim that has not yet been confirmed by Iranian officials. Speaking on Wednesday, April 1, Trump said that the United States would only consider this request if the Strait of Hormuz is “open, free, and secure.” He warned that until this condition is met, U.S. attacks against Iran will continue. According to him, Iran’s new president is “less radical and smarter than his predecessors” and has recently called for a ceasefire. Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, has faced disruptions since early March. About 20 million barrels of oil pass through this route daily, and any disruption to it affects global markets. Based on published information, since February 28, the United States and Israel have launched joint attacks against Iran, resulting in more than one thousand নিহত and extensive damage to infrastructure. There have also been reports of indirect contacts between U.S. officials and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, a claim he has denied. Donald Trump is expected to deliver a speech soon regarding the latest developments related to the conflict with Iran.
