Abbas Araghchi has called on the United Nations to take action against countries that violate its charter and principles of international law, including humanitarian and human rights law. In a phone call with António Guterres, Araghchi said the UN and its Secretary-General have a responsibility to clearly and firmly condemn such actions and to hold those responsible accountable under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, he also urged the international community to address the root causes of insecurity in the region, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, which he attributed to U.S. and Israeli military strikes. The statement added that Iran, as a coastal state of the Strait of Hormuz, has acted in accordance with international law by preventing the passage of vessels linked to countries involved in the attacks.
