The UNICEF Regional Director for South Asia, Sanjoy Wijesekera, has said that the time has come to reopen schools for girls in Afghanistan. Writing on X on Thursday 26 March, he said, “Girls have waited long enough, and the reopening of schools should give hope to everyone.” He added, “It is time for school doors to reopen, because hope, dignity, and the future begin with education.” UNICEF has previously emphasized that education is fundamental to building children’s futures and that reopening schools is not only their right but also a necessity for the development and progress of society. International organizations have also warned that prolonged deprivation of education will have long-term consequences for girls’ health, security, and employment opportunities.
