Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, has called for an independent, prompt, and transparent investigation into the airstrike on the “Omid” drug rehabilitation center in eastern Kabul. Referring to the statement issued by UN experts, Bennett emphasized that the investigation must be conducted in accordance with international law and with full protection of civilians, and that accountability for this incident must be ensured. He also stated that UN experts have urged the Taliban and Pakistan to agree on a permanent ceasefire and to resolve their border and security disputes through peaceful means. Earlier, UN experts had warned that border clashes between Pakistan and the Taliban have displaced more than 115,000 civilians and damaged civilian infrastructure, including homes, markets, and healthcare centers. The March 16 airstrike on the “Omid” center has also been condemned by UN experts, who stressed the importance of respecting international law, protecting civilians, and conducting an immediate and transparent investigation.
