The New York Times has reported that the Pentagon has ordered the deployment of approximately 2,000 soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East. According to two unnamed U.S. defense officials, these troops were selected from the division’s “Rapid Response” unit—a brigade-level force of around 3,000 personnel capable of deploying anywhere in the world within 18 hours. The officials added that additional forces may be sent to the region in the coming days. The exact locations of deployment have not been disclosed, but they are expected to be positioned to allow military access to Iran if needed. The move comes amid renewed threats from U.S. President Donald Trump targeting Iran’s energy facilities and increasing troop deployments, raising concerns about a potential escalation in the region, including tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.
