U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized Israeli President Isaac Herzog, calling him “weak and pathetic” and claiming that he had “lied” about a promise to pardon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Turkey’s Anadolu Agency reported on Monday, March 23, that Trump told reporters Herzog had repeatedly promised to pardon Netanyahu but failed to follow through on that promise. Trump also said that the Israeli president is “not a real leader” and is using the issue of Netanyahu’s pardon for political purposes. In response, according to the report, a senior Israeli official said that Herzog had never made such a promise and had only emphasized that any request for Netanyahu’s pardon would be reviewed according to legal procedures. Benjamin Netanyahu is facing ongoing domestic corruption charges, including allegations of receiving benefits and favors in exchange for legal decisions, legislative actions, and diplomatic support for wealthy businessmen and media figures. In another part of his remarks, Trump declined to give a clear answer about the possibility of war with Iran, including whether U.S. forces would target or seize Iran’s oil and gas infrastructure, saying he could not comment on the matter at this stage. Meanwhile, reports indicate that tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran are continuing, but precise details about casualties and field developments have not been independently confirmed.
