Amid ongoing tensions between the United States and the Taliban, Sebastian Gorka, a former Deputy Assistant to the U.S. President, strongly criticized the Taliban for detaining American citizens and called for their immediate release. He described the detentions as “hostage diplomacy” and warned that pressure on the Taliban would continue until all Americans are released. Reports indicate that Dennis Quail and Mahmood Shah Habibi are still being held in Taliban prisons. At the same time, the U.S. government has placed Taliban-controlled Afghanistan on its list of countries accused of “wrongful detentions” a move that reflects Washington’s serious concern over the Taliban’s treatment of foreign nationals. Critics say that the continuation of this trend is reinforcing the Taliban’s image as a group that uses detentions for political pressure and could further deepen the group’s international isolation.
