Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, has expressed deep concern over reported Pakistani airstrikes in the country and the resulting civilian casualties. He said he is seriously alarmed by reports of recent air attacks and stressed the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, including hospitals. Bennett called for full respect of international law. He also urged all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and make efforts to reduce tensions. Bennett extended his condolences to the families of Afghan victims affected by the strikes. Meanwhile, Hamdullah Fitrat, deputy spokesperson for the Taliban, said the death toll from the reported Pakistani airstrike on the “Omid” drug treatment hospital in Kabul has risen to 400. According to him, 400 bodies have been recovered so far, with around 250 others injured. He warned that the number of casualties could increase further. Fitrat added that large parts of the 2,000-bed hospital have been completely destroyed in the bombing, while rescue teams continue efforts to recover bodies from the rubble.
