The Taliban’s Supreme Court has announced that 21 people were publicly flogged in Kabul. According to the court, the punishment was carried out on Saturday, March 23, against individuals accused of buying, selling, and trafficking intoxicating tablets, methamphetamine, heroin, opium, alcoholic beverages, and hashish. The number of lashes ranged from 10 to 39, while their prison sentences were reported to be between seven months and four years and three months. Since returning to power in Afghanistan, the Taliban have repeatedly carried out public floggings of accused individuals and have also executed 12 people in front of hundreds of spectators. International human rights organizations have described executions and corporal punishment of accused individuals as violations of international law and human dignity, and have called for an end to such practices.
