A former Afghan soldier, Mohammad Nazir Paktiyawal, has died while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Texas, according to media reports. Paktyiawal, 41, had previously worked with U.S. Special Forces in Afghanistan. Reports say he died about a day after being detained by immigration authorities. The advocacy group AfghanEvac said he was arrested while dropping his children off at school near Dallas, where he lived with his wife and six children. According to reports, Paktiyawal had called his family from the detention center saying he was feeling unwell. He was later taken to Parkland Hospital for treatment but was declared dead the following day. U.S. authorities have not yet commented on the cause of his death. Reuters reported that he is the 12th asylum seeker to die in ICE custody this year.
