The United States has finalized a decision this week to permanently close its consulate in Peshawar. According to the United States Department of State, the diplomatic office had served as an important logistics hub for transfers to Afghanistan after 2001, and currently employed 18 American diplomats. Meanwhile, the United States Congress said the closure would save approximately $8 million annually, adding that the move would not negatively affect U.S. national interests. The news agency Associated Press reported that U.S. authorities described the step as part of broader efforts to reduce costs, emphasizing that the decision is not related to recent developments in the region.
