Authorities in Russia say mobile internet services will remain restricted until public safety can be ensured, according to officials from the Kremlin. The Kremlin added that the disruptions caused by the internet shutdown—including problems affecting businesses and economic activities—will also be reviewed. According to Agence France-Presse, not only has mobile internet been limited across Russia, but restrictions have also been imposed on channels on WhatsApp and Telegram as part of the latest measures tightening online communications. At the same time, Russia is attempting to promote a new social media application called “Max.” Critics, however, believe Russian authorities aim to use the platform to increase government monitoring of social networks.
