The United States has urged the Taliban to immediately release American citizens detained in Afghanistan. Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, said the Taliban are attempting to gain political concessions through what he described as “terrorist methods,” stressing that such actions will not succeed. Rubio called on the Taliban to release Mahmood Habibi, Dennis Covel, and other American citizens whom Washington says have been unjustly detained. The Taliban have previously denied detaining Habibi. Meanwhile, Adam Boehler, the US Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs, warned that the United States will no longer tolerate the detention of its citizens, stating that three Americans are currently being held in Afghanistan and must be released.
