UNAMA Warns Afghanistan Could Become Source of Global Instability

Georgette Gagnon, acting head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), has warned that Afghanistan’s continued isolation from the international system could have serious consequences for the country and the wider region. Speaking at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, she said that if the current challenges in Afghanistan are not addressed, the country could once again become a source of instability at the regional and even global level. Gagnon noted that political isolation and reduced international cooperation have made it more difficult to address Afghanistan’s economic, humanitarian, and security crises. She also referred to recent tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan, saying the clashes have imposed heavy human and economic costs on the Afghan population. Gagnon urged both sides to resolve their differences through dialogue and diplomacy and to work toward an immediate ceasefire to prevent further escalation and harm to civilians.
