14 Afghan Migrants Die After Boat Sinks Off Turkey’s Antalya Coast

At least 14 Afghan migrants have died after a boat carrying undocumented migrants sank off the coast of Antalya in southern Turkey, Turkish authorities said. According to local officials, the boat was spotted early Monday morning near the coast of the Demre district. Authorities reported that the passengers were migrants from Afghanistan, including women and children. Based on an official statement, Turkish Coast Guard units attempted to stop the vessel. However, the boat reportedly made sharp maneuvers while trying to flee and collided with a Coast Guard boat. As a result of the collision, several passengers fell into the sea. At least 14 people were killed in the incident. Authorities also stated that 14 migrants were detained, while seven others were rescued by Coast Guard teams. Officials added that the remaining survivors were transferred to the shore, where some of them received medical assistance. Local authorities said an investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
