The government of Turkmenistan plans to give special attention to increasing electricity production in 2026 as part of its broader strategy to strengthen its role in regional energy supply. Officials from the country have stated that during 2026, Turkmenistan will invest domestically in the power sector in order to expand electricity exports to neighboring countries. According to authorities, the national investment strategy in the electricity sector aims to strengthen investments specifically in export-oriented power generation. Turkmen media have reported that in the near future the country also plans to extend electricity supply to several northern districts of Afghanistan, including Bala Murghab, Khumab, and Qarqin. As part of its domestic development plans, Turkmenistan also intends to construct a high-voltage power transmission line between the city of Mary in Turkmenistan and Mashhad in Iran in 2026. The Turkmen government says that by modernizing existing power plants and building new generation units, it aims not only to meet domestic demand but also to transform the country into a major energy hub in the region.
