UN: Hunger Crisis in Afghanistan Is Worsening

The World Food Programme has warned that Afghanistan continues to face one of the most severe hunger crises in the world, with escalating clashes along the border with Pakistan further limiting access to health services. In a report, the agency said acute malnutrition is rising and that tens of thousands of children are at serious risk. The report stated that continued fighting could push poor and food-insecure families closer to a critical humanitarian threshold, noting that many are already living in extremely difficult and vulnerable conditions. The World Food Programme warned that prolonging the crisis could increase the number of people in need of food and humanitarian assistance. Meanwhile, clashes between Taliban fighters and Pakistani forces in border areas, including Paktia Province and Khost Province, are ongoing. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs also said that 16,370 families have been displaced due to the clashes.
