ZALMAY KHALILZAD: the former U.S. envoy for Afghanistan peace negotiations, has commented on a recent report by the United Nations regarding civilian casualties in Afghanistan. Khalilzad stated that he believes it is unlikely that the people of Pakistan support policies of the country’s governing institutions that have led to civilian deaths in Afghanistan. He further emphasized that, in his view, the divide between the Pakistani public and the country’s ruling structure is continuing to widen. The remarks were made amid recent reports indicating an increase in civilian casualties following alleged airstrikes attributed to Pakistani military forces.
