ISLAMABAD: Five police officers, including a senior official, were killed and several others wounded in an armed attack on a police vehicle in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday, local authorities said. The attack took place in the Lachi district of Kohat when gunmen opened fire on a police team that was transporting detainees. Officials said investigations were underway and measures were being taken to prevent similar incidents. The assault comes amid rising threats against security forces in northwestern Pakistan, where militant activity has surged in recent months. Some unconfirmed reports suggested the death toll could be six, with three others injured. The attack followed recent Pakistani airstrikes inside Afghanistan that reportedly killed nearly 20 people, including women and children. The Taliban had warned days earlier that they would retaliate against Pakistani military forces. No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the latest attack.
