MOSCOW: An explosion in a busy area of Moscow killed one police officer and injured two others, Russian media reported. According to the TASS news agency, the blast occurred late at night near the Savyolovsky railway station. The explosion reportedly happened as an individual neared a traffic police vehicle, killing one officer and sending two others to the hospital for treatment. Russia’s Investigative Committee said it had opened a criminal case on charges including the attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and the illegal possession of explosive materials. Images published by TASS showed a heavily damaged police car with shattered windows and debris scattered across the road. The incident comes amid a series of targeted attacks against Russian military and security officials in recent weeks. In early February, a senior intelligence officer was shot, and a separate bombing killed “General Fanil Servarov” along with two police officers. Ukraine has claimed responsibility for some recent attacks, including a bomb planted in an electric scooter that killed General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Protection Forces. Authorities have not yet confirmed who was responsible for the latest explosion.
