KABUL: Local sources in Paktika province have confirmed that Marghi Katawazi, the former commander of the local police in Yahya Khil district, was shot dead outside his home. Katawazi had returned to Afghanistan after four years abroad and had reportedly planned to spend the holy month of Ramadan with his family. However, unidentified gunmen, whom some sources allege were linked to the Taliban, opened fire on him, killing him on the spot. Civil society activists have condemned the killing and described the Taliban’s general amnesty decree as deceptive. There have previously been reports from various provinces of torture, detention, and killings of former military personnel and government employees, underscoring ongoing threats against those who served under the previous administration.
