ABUJA: Armed assailants have killed at least 50 people and abducted several women and children in northern Nigeria. According to Reuters, gunmen stormed the village of Tungan Dutsen in Zamfara State, setting homes ablaze and shooting at residents attempting to flee, leaving heavy casualties. Hamisu A. Faru, who represents Bukuyum South in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, said the attackers moved from one village to another during the assault. The incident follows a similar attack about two weeks ago in Niger State, where gunmen on motorcycles targeted three villages in the Borgu area Tungar Makera, Kunkuso, and Pisa, killing around 50 people and abducting several others. Witnesses said homes were burned and security forces had a limited presence at the time. The repeated attacks underscore the complex security crisis in northern Nigeria, where armed groups linked to the so-called Islamic State and criminal kidnapping gangs have carried out deadly assaults and mass abductions for ransom, posing a serious challenge to the government.
