KABUL: U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks about the prospects of reaching a meaningful nuclear agreement with Iran and the possibility of serious consequences if talks fail have triggered widespread reactions across the region and beyond. Iran’s ambassador to the UN described Trump’s remarks as a violation of UN Charter and called for immediate action in response. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that any attack on Iran would amount to “playing with fire,” underscoring Moscow’s concern over rising tensions. Trump said it would become clear within about ten days whether a nuclear deal with Tehran could be reached, cautioning that “bad things” would happen if negotiations collapse. He added that talks had been progressing “very well,” though significant issues remain unresolved, and suggested the United States could “take a step further” if necessary. The negotiations have involved senior figures including U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, both of whom have played roles in advancing the diplomatic track. Indirect talks between Iran and U.S. have continued in Muscat and Geneva, with Oman acting as mediator. The sensitive diplomatic process is unfolding amid increased U.S. military activity in Middle East, prompting concerns among regional countries about risk of further escalation. At the same time, Trump told a Gaza Peace Council meeting that $10 billion would be allocated from the United States and an additional $7 billion from allies for reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. He expressed hope that disarmament of Hamas could be achieved without force, though Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted that reconstruction will not begin until Hamas is disarmed. Leaders across region have repeatedly urged all sides to resolve their differences through dialogue and restraint, warning against further escalation of tensions.
