TEHRAN: Iran’s foreign minister Dr. Sayed Abbas Araghchi said progress was made in nuclear talks with the United States during meetings in Geneva, describing the discussions as opening a new window for dialogue between Tehran and Washington. He said the two sides moved closer to an agreement that could pave the way for a broader deal between the countries. “Progress has been made, and we are approaching an agreement that could create the ground for a good deal for both sides,” Araghchi said, commenting on the details of the meeting held on Sunday. U.S. officials, meanwhile, said representatives from both countries presented differing views and held serious discussions on those positions, adding that the talks showed signs of progress. At the same time, Badr al-Busaidi, Oman’s foreign minister, said much work remains before a deal can be reached on Iran’s nuclear program, but added that both sides are taking concrete steps toward that goal. Separately, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that there would be severe consequences if the talks fail. Iran has said any attack on the country would be met with what it described as a painful response.
