Second round of nuclear talks kicks off in Geneva; Trump says he will play ‘indirect’ role

TEHRAN: The second round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States began Tuesday in Geneva, to reach an agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear program and prevent escalating regional tensions. President Donald Trump stated that he will be involved in the talks in an “indirect” capacity and described the negotiations as important. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Geneva for preliminary meetings, emphasizing Tehran’s pursuit of a fair deal. The main point of contention remains uranium enrichment. Washington is seeking a halt to enrichment within Iran and wants to expand discussions to include missile programs, while Tehran insists it will only negotiate nuclear limitations in exchange for sanctions relief. Alongside diplomatic efforts, the regional environment remains tense: the U.S. has increased its military presence, and Iran has conducted exercises in the Strait of Hormuz. Experts caution that, despite some signs of optimism, big differences could complicate the prospects of reaching a final agreement.
