MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the withdrawal of former Soviet Union troops from Afghanistan as an unforgettable day in Russia’s military history, marking the 37th anniversary of the event. In a message issued on the occasion, Putin said Soviet forces had defended what he described as the “national interests of the homeland” and had carried out their duties with honor and courage. He added that during difficult trials, the soldiers demonstrated resilience, bravery, humanity, and high moral standards. Putin also stressed that the knowledge, skills, and experience of former Soviet soldiers should be used in educating Russia’s younger generation in patriotism, calling it an important national necessity. The last Soviet soldier left Afghanistan on the 26th of Dalwa in the solar year 1367. Since then, Russia has officially commemorated the day each year. Taliban officials also marked the 37th anniversary of the Soviet withdrawal. In his message, Putin said: “Your responsible civic stance, commitment, and loyalty to patriotic, spiritual, and moral values deserve respect.” On the same occasion, remembrance ceremonies were held in various cities across Russia and Belarus to honor fallen Soviet soldiers. Participants laid flowers at memorials, and in some schools, students were given what were described as “lessons in courage.”
