KABUL: Dalwa 26 marks the 37th anniversary of the defeat and withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan. The troops were compelled to leave Afghan soil after nearly a decade of military presence, following the relentless resistance of the Afghan people. This event took place in 1989, corresponding to 15 February in the Gregorian calendar. The conflict was one of the bloodiest in Afghanistan’s history; reports indicate that around 2 million Afghans were killed, disabled, or went missing, while approximately 15,000 Soviet soldiers also lost their lives. On this occasion, the Taliban government has declared Dalwa 26 a public holiday. The people of Afghanistan commemorate this day every year to honor the resistance of the Mujahideen and the determination of the people against occupying forces. Decades later, the descendants of those Mujahideen stood firm against other foreign forces, including the United States, enduring great hardships and sacrifices to preserve their nation, just as their ancestors had defeated the British Empire in Afghanistan. This historic day serves as a reminder of the Afghan people’s resilience, the importance of independence, peace, and the defense of their homeland against any threats and occupations. It is celebrated annually throughout the country in memory of past heroes.
