Taliban bans Valentine’s Day celebrations in Afghanistan

KABUL: February 14, known as Valentine’s Day or “Day of Lovers,” is celebrated in many countries around the world with the exchange of flowers, sweets, and expressions of love. On this occasion, couples and young people typically show their affection through gifts and by being in public places together. However, in Afghanistan under Taliban rule, the celebration and observance of this day have been officially banned, with Taliban officials deeming it a “Western” event that is incompatible with the country’s cultural and religious values and warning people against celebrating this day. As a result, flower and gift markets in Kabul and other cities have lost their former vibrancy, and many couples prefer to celebrate this occasion privately and discreetly at home. Reports indicate that since the Taliban came to power, public celebrations of Valentine’s Day have decreased, leading young people and couples to seek ways to express their affection within the family and in private settings. Some citizens have mentioned that even in previous years, Taliban crackdowns have contributed to the reduction of public celebrations. Despite the restrictions, Valentine’s Day remains a popular occasion globally for expressing love and exchanging gifts among lovers, often accompanied by extensive ceremonies in many countries.
