Public anger grows over use of state funds amid hunger

KABUL: Social media users have widely shared a video highlighting concerns over the Taliban’s use of public funds at a time when many people in Afghanistan are facing severe economic hardship and food insecurity. Many have commented that such actions are akin to adding salt to the wounds of a suffering nation. They argue: “In a country where people are desperate for a loaf of bread, burning items worth thousands of Afghanis in the air is an inhumane and un-Islamic act.” According to them [Social media users], every bullet that is shot into the air eventually falls back to the ground. These “lost bullets” often result in the injury and death of innocent civilians, particularly women and children. Others point out that armed individuals, having been removed from warfare, should focus on serving and securing the people, rather than perpetuating their previous violent habits at the expense of national resources. They emphasize that a responsible government should prioritize the well-being and security of its citizens, rather than using public funds for personal displays and threats to the community. This comes at a time when similar displays by Taliban members have been reported in various regions of the country, leading to personal and financial harm for some citizens.
