WASHINGTON: A group of Afghan citizens residing in the United States held a session titled “From Exile to Empowerment: Opportunities for Afghans in America.” The event took place at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., focusing on the opportunities and challenges faced by Afghan migrants. Organized by the Afghan diaspora community, the gathering brought together Afghan individuals living abroad who maintain connections to Afghanistan and are active in various cultural, academic, and social fields. Participants noted that migrants who left Afghanistan following the Taliban’s return are regarded as a “valuable asset” to the community due to their skills and professional experiences. Omar Sharifi, one of the attendees, mentioned that leaving Afghanistan after the Taliban’s resurgence was a difficult decision and a form of defiance. Experts highlighted that the exodus of numerous activists, university professors, researchers, and specialists has left Afghanistan facing a shortage of skilled professionals, making it challenging for future governments to fill this gap.
