KABUL: Afghan cricket star Rashid Khan has announced his support for the establishment of a national women’s cricket team in Afghanistan. Speaking to the media during the lead-up to the 2026 T20 World Cup, Rashid emphasized that having a women’s team is one of the critical requirements for maintaining Afghanistan’s full membership in the International Cricket Council (ICC). He stated, “We are eager to see everyone who represents Afghanistan on the field.” Rashid noted that as a player, he does not have a significant role in these decisions, emphasizing that the matter is up to “the big people,” referring to the Afghanistan Cricket Board and their governing decisions. This comes as the Afghanistan Cricket Board currently has 25 former contract-holding women players residing in Australia, Canada, and the UK, who have already participated in their first matches under the name “Afghan Women’s XI” in Melbourne in 2025.
