KABUL: The United Nations Security Council has reported that a draft resolution is expected to be presented for a vote later this month to extend the mission of the analytical support and monitoring team that assists the Afghanistan Sanctions Committee established in 1988. According to reports, the current mandate of the monitoring team is set to expire on February 17. The 1988 Sanctions Committee is responsible for the implementation of sanctions against certain Taliban officials, which include asset freezes, travel bans, and arms embargoes. The committee also organizes the sanctions list, evaluates exemption requests, and assists UN member states in enforcing sanctions through evaluations, reports, and recommendations from the monitoring team. This voting comes as the Security Council continues its review of the effectiveness of international sanctions related to Afghanistan.
