Protest statement from the Afghan Women’s Movement “Himmat”

KABUL: The Afghan Women’s Movement “Himmat” condemned Article 34 of the Taliban’s criminal procedural code through a theatrical performance in Baghlan. This article is a blatant violation of human rights and women’s rights, legalizing and normalizing violence against them. In the play, a woman who seeks refuge from domestic violence at her father’s house is instead criminalized rather than the perpetrator of the violence, vividly illustrating the misogyny and injustice of the ruling regime. Himmat emphasizes that women who act to preserve their lives and dignity should not be punished. The international community and the United Nations must not settle for ineffective statements. Our demand is clear: serious, decisive, and immediate support for the women of Afghanistan. Afghan women stand firm; either stand beside them or you will be a spectator to oppression. Seeking refuge is not a crime; do not legalize discrimination. A woman is an independent human being with dignity.
