KABUL: Stephen Rodriguez, the representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Afghanistan, emphasized the importance of the country’s economic development while presenting the “Assessment Report on Drug Use.” He stated that the support of the UN in this area is essential. Rodriguez noted that the UNDP assists Afghanistan’s economy by creating employment opportunities, strengthening the private sector, and improving infrastructure. He also mentioned that access to financial and energy resources is part of the UN’s programs aiding in the country’s economic reconstruction. The “Assessment Report on Drug Use” highlighted that drug use among women is concerning and that gathering accurate statistics is challenging due to a lack of information. The United Nations indicated that drug use is widely associated with social and economic pressures. The report stated, “Poverty, unemployment, and health issues contribute to drug use and exacerbate its prevalence, while the financial costs of drug use place additional pressure on households.”
