KABUL: The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has announced that the activities of the Afghan Embassy in Australia will be suspended after June 30, 2026. The department on Friday issued a joint statement with the Afghan Embassy in Canberra, stating that, due to existing conditions and limitations beyond the embassy’s control, it is not possible to continue operations in the current form. Both parties have agreed on an “orderly and dignified transition”. The Australian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the country will not accept any diplomats, honorary consuls, or representatives appointed by the Taliban and does not recognize the Taliban as the legitimate representatives of the Afghan people. The statement condemned the systematic human rights violations by the Taliban, particularly against women and girls, as well as the suppression of dissenting voices. Furthermore, the ministry added that, in accordance with the Vienna Convention, protective measures will be taken regarding the building and property of the embassy following its suspension. The Afghan Embassy in Australia has been managed by Wahidullah Waisi, a diplomat from the previous Afghan government. Earlier, SBS News reported that the Australian government had informed him that his credentials would not be renewed after February of next year. Meanwhile, the Refugee Council of Australia has expressed concern over this decision, warning that the closure of the embassy could force Afghan citizens to approach Taliban-controlled entities for identity documentation.
