Inside Taliban prisons: report cites 16 forms of torture

KABUL: The Taliban intelligence prisons have witnessed widespread human rights violations over the past four years, according to Bazgasht news agency. In a research report based on interviews with 12 released prisoners, the media has reported the presence of at least 16 types of torture in Taliban detention centers. According to the report, prisoners have been detained mainly on security, political, and civil activity charges, experiencing various forms of physical and psychological torture. Some of the reported forms of torture include:

  1. Electric Shocks– Administering electric shocks to the spine, neck, and limbs, causing severe pain and disability.
  2. Pressure on Genitals– Used to obtain forced confessions and humiliate the prisoner.
  3. Inserting Objects in the Anus– Including a gun’s head or other objects that cause lasting injuries.
  4. Weight Attached to the Genitals– Inflicts severe pain and weakens the area.
  5. Submerging the Head in Water– Creates fear and intense pain.
  6. Burning with a Rod– Causes skin burns and permanent scarring.
  7. Blocking Breathing with Plastic– Induces anxiety and a sensation of suffocation.

The report indicates that the tortures were not only aimed at extracting information but also intended to humiliate, break human dignity, and inflict long-term suffering upon the prisoners. Additionally, detainees recounted instances where Taliban members observed the torture, taking pleasure in the pain of the prisoners and laughing.
