KABUL: The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that millions of mothers around the world are facing severe postpartum depression, a mental health condition that, if not diagnosed and treated promptly, can have serious adverse effects on both maternal and child health. According to the organization, more than 10% of pregnant women and new mothers struggle with this issue. WHO emphasizes that postpartum depression is not merely a temporary emotional shift but a serious mental illness that negatively affects a mother’s daily life, parenting, and family relationships. The organization identifies several key factors contributing to this depression, including social and economic pressures, lack of family support, exposure to violence, and pre-existing mental health issues. Additionally, stigma and silence surrounding mental illnesses in many communities often prevent mothers from seeking timely help. WHO stresses that postpartum depression is treatable and that psychological therapy, social support, and, in severe cases, medication under professional supervision can improve mothers’ mental health. The organization urges health institutions to pay serious attention to the mental health of mothers during pregnancy and the postpartum phase.
