KABUL: The United Nations has urged countries to recognize gender apartheid as a crime in the new “Treaty on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes Against Humanity,” calling for support for Afghan women. In a statement, the UN emphasized that governments must listen to the demands of Afghan women and include gender apartheid in this treaty. According to the organization, gender apartheid should be classified as a crime against humanity, and there must be serious attention to the status of women within the treaty text. The UN stressed that this treaty can only be effective if the perspectives and experiences of women living under these restrictions are taken into account. The organization believes that Afghan women are not just passive witnesses to their situation but are best aware of the problems and pressures they face. Since the Taliban’s return to power, women and girls in Afghanistan have been deprived of education and work, with extensive restrictions placed on their participation in society. Afghan women are calling for gender apartheid to be recognized as a crime under international law.
