KABUL: The European Union’s Office for Humanitarian Aid in Asia has announced that drought in Afghanistan is increasingly complicating access to drinking water for millions of people. In a message today, the office stated that it is working in collaboration with the organization “Solidarity” to construct water wells equipped with hand pumps to provide safe water to local communities. According to the EU, the initiative aims to mitigate the impacts of the water crisis and assist vulnerable families. The European Union has previously warned about the water crisis in Afghanistan, especially in the capital, Kabul. Additionally, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that Kabul’s water resources may completely dry up by 2030. The organization added that currently, eight out of ten people in Afghanistan are forced to drink contaminated water.
