SPAIN: Spanish authorities have confirmed that a collision between two high-speed trains in southern Spain has resulted in at least 24 fatalities and 73 injuries, with 15 of the injured in critical condition. The incident occurred last night near the “Adamuz” area in the province of Córdoba, while one train, traveling from Málaga to Madrid, derailed and collided with another train en route from Madrid to Huelva, causing the second train to also derail. Approximately 400 passengers were aboard the two trains, most of whom were Spanish citizens returning to Madrid after the weekend. Transport Minister Oscar Puente stated that the cause of the accident is still unknown, adding, “Derailed on a straight track is very unusual.” El País reported that the 27-year-old driver of the Madrid-Huelva train was among the deceased. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has canceled his travel plans to address the emergency situation. The incident marks one of the deadliest rail accidents in Spain since 2013.
