TEHRAN: Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, has placed the responsibility for the deaths of Iranian citizens during recent widespread protests on U.S. President Donald Trump. Khamenei, on Saturday described the protests as a result of “important international and domestic conditions” and stated that he holds Trump guilty for the “casualties, damages, and slander against the Iranian nation.” He added, “Those who committed destruction, killed people, and set fires have been introduced as the Iranian nation.” The protests began around 20 days ago in several cities across Iran and were met with extensive security responses. Initially triggered by worsening economic conditions, currency fluctuations, and the decline in the national currency’s value, the protests later expanded to include political demands. According to the “Human Rights Activists News Agency” (HRANA), by Friday, the confirmed number of protesters killed had reached 3,090. CBS News reported, citing its sources, that the death toll could be at least 12,000, with some estimates reaching up to 20,000. Meanwhile, the state-affiliated news agency Tasnim announced about a week ago that at least 103 governmental and security forces members had been killed. However, due to widespread internet shutdowns in Iran, independent access to information and precise statistics remains challenging. Khamenei further accused the U.S. of “planning” the protests, claiming that Washington’s goal is to “swallow Iran.” He also asserted that Trump encouraged the protesters and spoke of military support. The Supreme Leader emphasized that Tehran possesses specific documents demonstrating Israel’s role in assisting the United States.
