KABUL: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has announced that the Italian government has contributed one million euros to create income opportunities for Afghan women and youth. The Afghanistan section of the organization stated today that this funding will provide income opportunities for 6,796 women and youth in the provinces of Herat and Nangarhar. The assistance will be utilized in the second phase of the project titled “Improving the Welfare of Afghan Women and Youth through Increasing Legal Livelihood Opportunities,” which began in December 2024 and has already supported over 1,500 vulnerable families in its initial phase. Italy has indicated that in the second phase, families will be encouraged and supported to cultivate alternative crops such as saffron and roses instead of opium poppy.
