KABUL: The United Nations has warned that returning to Afghanistan does not guarantee successful resettlement, as new figures show that only 11% of returning Afghans have been able to find work. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that many returnees still face significant challenges in resettling and finding income. According to assessments, one in four returnees has not been able to settle in their designated residences, and over half lack essential documentation, severely limiting their access to basic services and job opportunities. The report indicates that 25% of returnees have been unable to return to their original districts or regions. Economic pressures remain severe, with 56% of household heads among the returnees stating they cannot meet their families’ basic needs. The IOM notes that 35% of household heads among the returnees and 36% of those who returned alone have been unable to find work, raising concerns over long-term stability and sustainable livelihoods. These findings come as the Taliban reported that about 1.8 million Afghan refugees returned to the country in 2025. However, international organizations warn that unless access to jobs, documentation, and basic services improves, the large-scale return of refugees may further worsen Afghanistan’s already precarious humanitarian and economic situation.
