CARACAS: Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, has announced a seven-day national mourning. This decision follows U.S. military operations conducted last week in the capital, Caracas, during which Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were arrested. The Venezuelan government stated that at least 56 individuals were killed in these operations, including 32 Cuban military and police personnel who were performing security duties as part of cooperative agreements in Venezuela. Officials noted that the deaths of these individuals represent significant human and political losses for the country. On the other hand, U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the events, stating that the temporary Venezuelan authorities will send between 30 to 50 million barrels of oil to the U.S. from sanctioned oil reserves. He suggested that this step would be beneficial for both countries and could aid in improving Venezuela’s economic situation. U.S. officials have yet to provide further clarification on the specifics of the military operations and the nature of the arrests. Furthermore, the Venezuelan government has labeled these operations a blatant violation of its national sovereignty and indicated its intention to discuss the matter with international organizations. These developments occur amid ongoing political instability, economic challenges, and international sanctions faced by Venezuela, raising questions about the region’s security and political future.
