UN warns unequal AI development could widen global inequality

KABUL: In a recent report, the United Nations has stated that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is experiencing unprecedented growth worldwide, with expectations that its market value will reach $4.8 trillion by 2033. However, a key question remains: who stands to benefit the most from this advancement? According to the UN report, while AI has the potential to strengthen economies, increase production, and create new job opportunities, it also presents a risk of job displacement for up to 40% of current positions. These changes could particularly impact developing countries, many of which are ill-prepared for workforce retraining and technological transitions. The report highlights that many developing nations still lack clear national strategies for AI, while wealthy countries and large tech firms are moving ahead to capitalize on the benefits of this technology. The UN warns that this situation could deepen global inequality further. Additionally, the United Nations emphasizes that the voices of many countries are not being heard in the creation of international laws and principles concerning AI. The organization has called on the international community to establish fair, inclusive, and transparent frameworks for AI governance so that this technology can be utilized for the welfare of all humanity.
