BEIJING: Wang Yi, China’s Foreign Minister, stated that Beijing cannot accept any country considering itself the “police or judge of the world” following the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the United States. According to Reuters, Wang condemned the recent developments in Venezuela and emphasized that the sovereignty and security of nations should be maintained based on international law, asserting that no power has the right to assume the role of world police or judge. Maduro is currently being held in a detention center in New York and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday on charges of drug trafficking. In recent years, China has sought to bolster its global diplomatic role, with successful trade negotiations with the U.S. and mediation between Saudi Arabia and Iran in 2023 boosting the country’s confidence. However, Donald Trump’s claim that the United States will now oversee the Venezuelan government poses a significant test for the strategic partnership between China and Venezuela.
