Venezuela appoints Interim President CARACAS: Venezuela’s Supreme Court has appointed Delcy Rodríguez as interim president of the country. Following the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by United States special forces, the Supreme Court on Sunday, named Rodríguez—Maduro’s vice president—as interim president. According to Reuters, the Supreme Court said in its ruling that the necessary legal framework must be established to ensure the continuity of government, the administration of state affairs, and the defense of national sovereignty during the president’s forced absence. The development follows a special U.S. operation ordered by President Donald Trump, carried out early Saturday, during which Maduro was detained and transferred to New York.
