WASHINGTON: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Israel on Saturday amid tensions among U.S. allies in the Middle East, following Israel’s attack on Hamas leaders in Qatar and the expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank. Rubio stated before his trip that the United States and President Donald Trump are not satisfied with these attacks, but that relations with Israel will not be affected. He plans to discuss hostages, militants, and the future of Gaza with Israeli officials. According to Rubio, it remains unclear who will be responsible for the reconstruction of Gaza and who will bear the costs. He emphasized that 48 hostages are still held by Hamas, and their immediate release is essential. This visit comes after Israel launched a two-year war on October 7, 2023, following attacks by Hamas, resulting in over 64,000 deaths in Gaza and a hunger crisis. Israel’s recent airstrike on Doha targeting Hamas leaders provoked reactions from Arab countries and halted mediation talks with Qatar. After his visit to Israel, Rubio will travel to the UK to join Trump on a scheduled trip.
