MOSCOW: The Romanian Ministry of Defense has announced that a Russian drone has violated its airspace. This incident marks the second violation by Russian drones in NATO airspace in recent days, prompting Romania to scramble two fighter jets. According to a report from Reuters, the drone entered Romanian territory by approximately 10 kilometers and operated near NATO airspace for about 50 minutes before disappearing from radar. Romanian officials have emphasized that the drone was likely dispatched as part of a broader Russian assault on Ukraine, though it did not cause any damage to Romanian infrastructure. This incident occurred just days after a similar violation in Poland. On September 9, Russian drones entered Polish airspace between the 19th and 22nd, leading Polish authorities to temporarily close an airport. These events have sparked widespread criticism among NATO member countries, with the President of Ukraine describing it as an “extension of the war into NATO territory.”
