TEHRAN: The G7 countries have condemned Iran’s destabilizing actions abroad, as stated in a declaration by members of the G7 Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM), according to the U.S. Department of State. The declaration emphasizes their commitment to counter any actions that undermine their national sovereignty. The statement, signed by the core members—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union—along with relevant members such as Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Sweden, highlights that “Iranian intelligence agencies have increasingly attempted to assassinate their political opponents abroad.” The declaration notes that Iran has engaged in abductions outside its borders and has harassed and tortured its opponents, actions that clearly weaken the national sovereignty of these countries. The G7 RRM declaration comes shortly after the Australian government unexpectedly announced the expulsion of Iran’s ambassador and three other officials from Canberra. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese accused the Iranian government of being involved in two anti-Semitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne. Australia’s Foreign Minister urged citizens, particularly Iranian-Australians, to avoid traveling to Iran, labeling the Iranian regime as unpredictable and violent. Last year, the UK’s domestic security agency (MI5) reported identifying at least 20 plots by Iran targeting British nationals or individuals residing in the UK whom it perceives as threats since January 2022. A report from the UK Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee warned that Iran poses a multidimensional and growing threat to the UK. Sweden’s security service also stated that Iran has used tools of violence in other European countries to silence critics and those deemed threats to Tehran’s regime.
